For many years, I was responsible for budgeting and treasury of several holdings, built plan-fact-forecast cycles, passed investment committees and stress tests. As a result, I think not about “indicators”, but rather about the viability of a business model: will the company withstand seasonality, supply disruptions, tariff increases, foreign exchange rates, a shift strike or an accident at a hub.

What does this give in practice? First, I quickly distinguish “paper profit” from sustainable cash flow: I see where EBITDA is inflated due to one-time effects, repair capitalization or overstated work-in-progress. Second, I read reports through the lens of the workshop: level of capacity utilization, repair discipline, equipment wear, downtime structure, quality of orders and prepayments. Third, I understand the real cost structure: energy intensity, logistics, share of imported components, payment advances and warehouses turnover duration, whose margin depends on a single supplier or client. A separate block is investments: CAPEX vs. CAPEX maintenance, backlog of “deferred repairs”, project payback in real, not presentation-based assumptions.

What do analysts without production background often miss? Three things: (1) quality of profit vs. its size; (2) time as the main risk (order cycle, repair “window”, inventory turnover); (3) bottlenecks — one compressor, one port, one supplier — that can collapse the entire DCF. That’s why my investment conclusions always undergo “field validation”: a number must be confirmed by technology, and a strategy – by logistics and shifts. Only then does reporting become reality, not decoration.

— Julia, you held high ranked positions in the financial sector and managed budgets of huge holding. Tell us, how does the state of the regions, where these enterprises are based (be it an oil terminal or a railcar manufacturing plant) affect their investment attractiveness today? What do you look at first when evaluating a company tied to its region?

— The experience of managing budgets of large holdings in various regions of Russia — from the Far East to the Central part — taught me to look at a company not in isolation from the territory where it resides. After all, a company’s financial condition directly depends on the “oxygen” the region breathes: infrastructure, tariffs, logistics, labor, social environment— all this either strengthens or limits the business.

When I evaluate a company’s investment attractiveness, I start with the regional profile. If it’s a manufacturing industry, it’s important how developed the energy and transport infrastructure is: stability of energy supply, availability of access roads, how close it is to ports or railways. For logistically complex regions like Yakutia, Magadan, Kamchatka, the key factor is the cost of delivery and seasonality of supplies. One month delay or a storm can wipe out annual profit, if the company operates “on the edge.”

Second, I always look at the region’s demographics and standard of living. Average salary, employment level, population purchasing power — these are indirect, but accurate indicators of whether there will be demand for the company’s products or services. For example, in energy or mechanical engineering, it’s important to understand: is the region growing or dying out? Is there construction in progress, industrial expansion, infrastructure investments? Without this, there won’t be stable demand or long-term contracts.

The third criterion is concentration risk. The holdings I worked for had assets in different regions: gold mining from Vladivostok to Magadan, mechanical engineering in Central Russia, energy – in the South. This diversified approach always protected against local risks — be it a flood, logistics failure or administrative changes in a specific region.

Finally, I evaluate region’s policy and business interaction with local authorities. Where dialogue is established, where the company participates in social projects, where authorities support investment, risks of regulatory surprises are much lower. This isn’t visible in reports, but is keenly felt, when you’ve built budgets in such conditions yourself.

That’s why I believe the region is not just a backdrop, but part of the business model. A smart investor should evaluate not only multipliers, but also where the company lives, who surrounds it, and how the region breathes today.

— You left employment at 30, having passive income. This is a dream for many. What was the hardest part of this transition? And what’s the most important financial advice you’d give to those, who are just thinking about such step, but are afraid?

— The path to financial independence is not a magical story about a “lucky break”, but the result of consistency, discipline and common sense. When I say that by 30 I had passive income that allowed me not to work, many think it was easy. In reality, the hardest part was not earning but resisting the temptation to spend.

Early in my career, I was an accountant, then, I transferred to financial sector and dealt with budgeting. I worked a lot, developed quickly, and my income grew accordingly. In 2007, my salary was about 250,000 rubles, and then it grew to 750,000 — huge money for that time. But, despite this, I spent very little: I already had my own apartment, didn’t lead a lavish lifestyle, and every month I set aside part of my income, making it as a habit.

That’s how my first investments came to fruition — first in real estate, then in the stock market. I bought one apartment, then a second one, opened a brokerage account, and my money started working for me. Gradually, dividends, interest and rental income equaled my salary. That’s when I realized: you can be independent of an employer, if you smartly structure your income.

My main principle then and now: first save, then multiply. It doesn’t matter how much you earn — what matters is how much you save and how you manage that capital. I never pursued dubious schemes, didn’t “chase hypes” or followed trends. Conservative, but stable decisions — that’s what builds capital.

What would I advise those who are afraid to start? First and foremost – stop being afraid. Money doesn’t like fear; it likes structure. Start small: track expenses, build a financial cushion and make your first investment, even if it’s just 5,000 rubles. Because when you hesitate, time works against you.

There’s a famous phrase: “You never know what you can do till you try”. This is about investing in its purest form. Don’t wait for the perfect moment, start acting now. The world changes, markets move, and you can move with them — consciously and gradually.

And also: don’t think that investing is just about money. It’s about the freedom to choose where and how to live, what to do and who to work with. I have students who started from scratch, from one salary, and in a couple of years were able to not just create a cushion, but to completely change their lives. One example is my student who, after starting to invest, realized she could earn differently, moved to a more interesting and better-paid job, and then became an investor with passive income.

So, my main advice: don’t be afraid, start, and your capital will begin working for you much sooner than you think.

— Your motto: “While you’re thinking about whether to turn to a professional — you’re losing money.” Could you provide a specific example or case that clearly shows what this “thinking” costs in numbers?

— My motto — “While you’re thinking about whether to turn to a professional, you’re losing money” — wasn’t born from marketing, but from dozens of real human stories. One such case I remember particularly, because it captures the essence of investment psychology and the cost of delaying decisions.

In 2021, a woman with a capital of about 80,000 dollars approached me for the first time. Her goal was simple and mature — to preserve her money because inflation, devaluation and market uncertainty were already eroding her savings. We discussed a strategy, and I proposed a diversified portfolio: part in foreign currency bonds, part in shares of Russian exporters and a bit in the American market through ETFs. Everything was ready to start, but she said: “I’ll think about it. I want to rest and then I’ll decide.”

A year passed. She came back. Her capital was now 50,000 dollars. The market situation had changed, currency risks had grown, and I proposed a new portfolio structure. The client agreed again… and disappeared again.

The third time, she appeared another year later — now with 30,000 dollars left. This time, she was determined, signed up for my personal mentorship program, where we manage capital together for three months and teach the person to work with the market consciously. But even at this stage she dragged out the decision, “took a pause” — and disappeared.

Two months later, she wrote to me in despair. The money was completely lost. Her husband trusted a friend who “through connections” offered a super-profitable investment. They transferred everything, down to the last penny. The result was zero. The family was left without savings, without a cushion, without capital they could have lived on for years.

This story holds a simple but painful truth: procrastination is also an investment decision, just with negative returns. Money doesn’t sit still: it’s either multiplied by professionals or “eaten” by inflation and mistakes.

Working with clients, I see this scenario constantly: a person doubts, waits for the “best moment”, thinks they can manage alone — and then loses years and capital. Yet, all it would take is one step: start on time.

That’s why my motto isn’t just a phrase; it’s a formula of financial reality. While you hesitate, the market doesn’t wait. And if you want to preserve and grow your capital, it’s important not to delay the decision. Because in investing, as in life, the most expensive resource is time.

— You are registered with the Central Bank and have all the key certifications. In your opinion, how protected is the private investor in Russia today? And what is the main task of a professional advisor in conditions of high volatility and sanctions — to save capital or to seek growth opportunities?

— I am indeed in the register of investment advisors of the Central Bank of Russia and have all the professional certifications that confirm my status. And, to be honest, over the past few years, I’ve became convinced: the private investor in Russia is very weakly protected — both legally and psychologically.

In Russia, there is still no full-fledged investor protection system at the level of, for example, the EU or the USA. Yes, the Central Bank maintains a register, regulates advisors’ activities, insures brokerage accounts, but the main protection is the person’s own awareness. And that can only be built through education and professional guidance.

The role of an advisor today is not just to select tools, but to preserve capital and protect the client from themselves. Most mistakes are made not because of the market, but because of emotions: panic, greed, the desire to “recover losses”. An advisor is the one who stands between the client and their impulses, helping them make rational, not emotional decisions.

Moreover, a professional advisor:

• Forms a capital management strategy based on the client’s goals and investment horizon, not on social media trends;

• Tracks regulatory changes and market risks, adapting the portfolio;

• Explains where risk is justified and where it’s a trap;

• Builds the client’s psychological resilience to market volatility, helping them act according to a plan, not emotions.

I often say: “An advisor is not a person who makes bets. It’s a person who builds system, where capital lives, grows and survives any crises”.

Today, being a private investor without professional support is like piloting a plane after reading instructions from YouTube. Yes, you might take off, but where and how you land is an open question.

— You are not only an advisor, but also a teacher and coach. In your opinion, what is more important for a client’s success: serve them “fish” in the form of specific recommendations, or teaching them how to “fish” — that is, to think and analyze independently? Where is the line in your work?

— In investing, the question of “fish or fishing rod” is not resolved in favor of one side — it’s equally important to deliver results and to teach how those results are achieved. It all depends on the scale of the capital and the person’s readiness to take responsibility.

If we’re talking about large capital — 10, 20, 30 million rubles and above — the priority is clearly professional management. Such capital requires constant monitoring, macroeconomic analysis, tracking news, handling currency risks and diversification. One wrong step — and you can loose millions. That’s why I often compare an investment advisor to a doctor: if you have a serious amount, you don’t treat yourself based on internet advice; you go to a specialist. It’s the same with money. An advisor knows how to act in a crisis, how to reallocate assets, how to minimize losses and where to lock in profits on time.

However, today you can’t just be a passive investor who “hands everything over and waits for results”. It’s important to understand what your advisor is doing and why. That’s why I always educate my clients — I explain why we buy a particular instrument, where the risks are, what “long horizon” means and how market psychology works. A modern investor must think, not just delegate. This is protection against mistakes and fraud.

Unfortunately, there are hundreds of such stories now. Here’s an example from practice: one of my clients met a man at a business school who called himself an investor. He wasn’t in the Central Bank’s register but spoke convincingly about deals, showed screenshots of profits and even persuaded her to entrust him with 100,000 dollars. At first, everything looked like a “successful start”: a couple of months of profitable trades, convincing reports and confidence in his “professionalism”. Then he suggested transferring the money to a “reliable broker”, supposedly through his company. The client trusted him — and ended up losing everything. The broker turned out to be fake, the man a fraudster and later he began threatening her.

That’s why I always emphasize: when choosing someone to entrust your capital to, check if they are in the Central Bank’s register of investment advisors. This isn’t a formality — it’s a guarantee that you’re dealing with a professional with legal responsibility and obligations to the client.

Thus, my answer is this:

• For large capital — entrust management to a professional, just as you entrust your health to a doctor;

• But at the same time, learn to understand what they’re doing to stay informed and protect yourself from manipulation.

The investor of the 21st century must be both conscious and strategic. An advisor can build a system, but the person must understand its logic. Only then can you both preserve capital and learn to grow it — wisely, without fear or illusions.

— Julia, you accompany deals and hold “advisor-client” meetings. What are the most common psychological mistakes private investors make, and how do you help them overcome those?

— The most common mistakes investors make, which I encounter in my practice — especially now, when private capital is actively growing and many are entering the market for the first time — are related not to economics, but to psychology. People lose not because they chose “the wrong stocks”, but because they chose the wrong behavior.

The first and most typical mistake is greed disguised as ambition. Clients often come to me, inspired by stories from Telegram or YouTube, and say: “I want to earn 200% in a year”.

And when you calmly explain that such returns are either impossible or come with a full risk of capital loss, they get disappointed — because someone on the internet “promised”. This is the illusion of easy money. Those who base decisions on it almost always end up the same way — with a loss of their deposit.

The second mistake is fear of drawdowns. People are not prepared for the fact that the market lives in cycles. They buy an asset at its peak — when “everyone says it’s rising” — and then sell in panic at the bottom, when the price falls. This creates the classic investment trap: “bought high — sold low”. In reality, a smart investor should do the opposite — buy when it’s scary and sell when it’s greedy. But this requires psychological resilience and an understanding of market patterns.

The third mistake is approaching market as a casino. Many expect instant results: invest today — profit tomorrow. If an asset doesn’t grow in a week, the person exits at breakeven and says: “The market doesn’t work”. Such investors simply don’t give their capital time to unfold. The market is not a bet, but a process, where the winner is the one who knows how to wait and analyze.

That’s why in my work, I place huge emphasis on forming an investor’s mindset. Together with the client, we determine their real risk profile because often a person thinks they’re “aggressive”, but as soon as the portfolio drops by 3%, panic sets in, sleepless nights begin, and they want to sell everything. I show in practice how volatility, corrections, growth periods and consolidation work, so the person understands: this isn’t a crisis, it’s the market’s breathing.

We work on basic principles:

• Don’t buy on hype,

• Set stops and limits,

• Know how to wait for results,

• Assess risk in money, not percentages,

• Understand the investment horizon.

My task as an advisor is not only to select tools, but also to help a person become an emotionally mature investor. Please, name three universal steps that anyone can take right now to improve their financial situation, regardless of their income level.

— My experience shows: you can improve your financial situation regardless of income level if you start not with earning, but with awareness. Money loves order, structure, and attention. That’s why I highlight three universal steps that every person should take — right now.

Step N1. Keep a personal budget — calculate, don’t guess.

This is the simplest and at the same time, the most shocking exercise. When a person first records all their income and expenses — not just receipts, but plan and fact — they suddenly realize where the money disappears to.

I give this task to every participant in my programs at the online university “Finansology”: for a month, track expenses daily and then compare the results with the planned budget. The reaction is always the same — shock. People see the real picture for the first time and start to understand how their own money actually works.

A budget isn’t a boring Excel sheet; it’s a tool for controlling your life. It gives freedom because you stop “guessing” about your finances and start managing them.

Step N2. Systematize expenses and cut out the unnecessary.

After you see where the money goes, the stage of financial discipline begins. Here, it’s not just about saving but about stopping spending without a meaningful outcome. I always ask myself one question: what will I gain by investing this money here? If the answer isn’t clear, the purchase isn’t needed. This forms a new habit — think first, then spend. For many of my clients, this skill alone saves 15–20% of their budget monthly, and the freed-up money can be directed to savings or investments.

Step N3. Start the “compound interest effect” — invest regularly.

Even small amounts, invested systematically, turn into capital. It doesn’t matter where you start — with 5,000 rubles or 50,000. The main thing is to do it every month and not break the chain.

When you set aside a fixed portion of income (at least 10%) and invest it in reliable instruments, you launch a process where money starts working for you, not the other way around.

Over a few years, this builds a financial cushion, then capital, and later — passive income.

In summary:

Calculate and analyze — don’t guess.

Spend consciously — not impulsively.

Invest regularly — don’t put it off for “later.”

These three steps are universal. They work the same for a person with an income of 50,000 rubles and for an entrepreneur with 500,000. The difference is only in scale. But the principle is always the same: first management, then growth.

— You founded “the best school for private investors” and give lectures at MSU. In your opinion, what is the main gap in the financial education of Russians? And why do people still go to “gurus” instead of certified specialists?

— Financial education in Russia today is at the stage of maturation. Over the past 10 years, people have become much more interested in investments, personal capital, and pension planning — but the level of awareness still lags behind the speed of access to information.

As a result, we have a paradox: a sea of information, a minimum of knowledge. The main problem is a low level of critical thinking and excessive trustfulness. Russians, by nature, are kind, open and trusting people. We believe words and don’t verify facts. When a “bank employee” or “investment consultant” calls, many don’t even try to confirm who’s actually on the other end of the line. People trust a voice because we historically have a strong culture of personal contact and authority. But in the world of finance, this turns into vulnerability.

I call it the “trust without verification syndrome”. It’s the prime reason for most financial losses among Russians. And it’s not just about fraudsters — it also shows up in attitudes toward “influencers” who sell courses as “easy investing” or “risk-free income”. People choose not competence but charisma. They’re drawn to someone who speaks confidently and beautifully, not someone who truly understands the market and has professional status.

The second major problem is the lack of a habit to analyze and plan ahead. Many still live from paycheck to paycheck, not tracking expenses, not having a financial cushion, not thinking about what will happen in 5–10 years. When I give lectures at MSU, I always start with a simple question: “Who among you knows how much one month of your life costs?” Usually, only a few raise their hands.

That’s why I believe the main task of financial education is not just to teach people to count money, but to teach them to think strategically, to see the cause-and-effect connections between their decisions and financial outcomes. When a person starts thinking critically, they stop believing “magical stories” about quick 200% annual returns and start seeking professionals with verified qualifications. That’s why the mission of my school is not just to teach investing, but to form financially mature people who know how to make decisions, verify sources, trust only professionals and build capital with an understanding of how the economy works.

— You are a successful media expert on TV and radio. How does publicity help and, perhaps, hinder your main work? Do you feel heightened responsibility when your words can influence the decisions of thousands of people?

— Undoubtedly, publicity is both strength and responsibility. When you are a public expert, every word you say is taken seriously. People invest, make decisions, change strategies — and sometimes all this is based on your single comment. That’s why I never treat my appearances as “PR” — it’s always work that requires precision, analysis and professional caution.

I actively collaborate with many leading Russian publications: Izvestia, Moskovsky Komsomolets, Komsomolskaya Pravda, the PRIME agency and others. My comments are regularly published, and my forecasts often make it to the top topics of the day. For example, when I gave forecast at the beginning of the year about the key rate dropping to 18%, that material spread across more than 1,300 Telegram channels. And this is an indicator not only of interest in the topic, but also of the level of audience trust.

At the same time, I understand: one wrong word can trigger a market reaction or influence the decisions of thousands of people. That’s why I speak as carefully as possible and always rely on facts and data, not emotions.

I have a dual responsibility — as a media personality and as a professional investment advisor listed in the register of the Central Bank of Russia. My activities are regulated: I’m monitored not only by the audience, but also by the Central Bank, self-regulatory organizations and the professional community. This means I cannot afford populism, “loud promises” or emotional forecasts. Everything I say must be verified and backed by analysis. That’s exactly why my forecasts and comments are valued: they’re not about noise, but about substance. I only say what has economic grounding. And when the market actually confirms my words — that’s the best indicator of the quality of my work.

But with all this responsibility, I believe publicity helps rather than hinders. It allows me to bring professional knowledge to a wide audience, increase people’s financial literacy and shape an investment culture in the country. This is also part of my mission — not just to advise private clients but to influence the market through education and awareness. Publicity without professionalism is just popularity. My task is to ensure that behind my publicity, there is always reputation and real results.

— Thank you for the interview, Julia!
